This whole thing bothers me greatly.

There is not one of us who is not immune to bogus informant tips of drug use/dealing or terrorist support from such unjustified searches and arrest.

Even reasonable questioning of authority can lead to problems.

A bit more than a year ago, a tenant in the aprtment building where I reside got herself drunk to the point of passing out with food on the stove. It caught fire around 2 AM. We were all evacuated from the building. The building manager got the fire out before the fire dept. and police arrived, but there was still a fair amount of smoke in the building. When I objected to the fire dept. repeatedly entering my apt., knowing full well no one was in there and leaving the door to my apt. open to the smoke still in the hallways, I was threatened with arrest by both firemen and police.

Too much power tripping seems to be the norm.

I read quite a bit of Radley Balko's commentary about Cory Maye last year. (I'd link to it but his website seems to be down right now.) Due to Balko and the rest of the blogosphere's efforts on behalf of Maye, his case attracted a lot of attention and his death sentence was overturned this fall.

Of course, nothing will bring Kathryn Johnston back,
